Biographical / Historical

The 1943 Report of the President describes: “…the Mayling Soong Foundation was established in June, 1942, to honor Madame Chiang Kai-shek on the twenty-fifth anniversary of her graduation from Wellesley College. The purpose of the Foundation is to interpret China and the other nations of the East to the American college students. During the first year gratifying progress was made in implementing this interpretation. Under the leadership of a faculty committee the program was inaugurated by a stimulating four-day Institute on the Far East con- ducted early in October by distinguished Chinese and American scholars who discussed the social and political problems of China… The Library contributed to this coordinated effort of interpretation by adding some two hundred volumes to the Far East Collection installed in one of the alcoves of the main reading room. The plans for next year include the continuation of the lecture program and the further development of the library collection. The course on the Art of the Far East, given by George Rowley, Associate Professor at Princeton University, was so enthusiastically received by both faculty and students that he has been reappointed for the coming year. Furthermore, the College Wellesley College takes pleasure in announcing the first assignment under the Foundation of the Mayling Soong Scholarship. Chandralekha Pandit, coming from Isabella Thoburn College in India, will enter Wellesley with advanced standing.” (Page 9) A circa 1947 pamphlet* on the Mayling Soong Foundation describes the Foundation Program: “The foundation supplements these courses [in the college curriculum] by a rich extra-curricular program… In its first five years, the Foundation has provided- significant additions to the far eastern book collection in the College Library… conference with such authorities as Dr. Y. P. Mei and Dr. J. Leighton Stuart of Yenching in regard to future plants for exchange study and teaching… a grant for sociological research to Miss Mary Treudley, Associate Professor of Sociology at Wellesley spending 1946-1947 at Ginling College in China… special lectures each year on various aspects of the Far East… two institutes of several days duration highlighting the program and now established as a quadrennial event… the publication of the proceedings of the Institute on “Problems of American Policy in the Pacific” by the Rutgers University Press.”
