Biographical Note

Jorge Guillén (1893-1984) was a prominent Spanish poet known for his contributions to the literary movement of the Generation of '27. Born in Valladolid, Spain, Guillén studied philosophy and humanities in Madrid and Granada before teaching at the University of Paris from 1917-1923. There he met his wife, Germaine Cahen, whom he married in 1921. Jorge and Germaine had a daughter, Teresa, in 1922 and a son, Claudio, in 1924.

Guillén taught at the University of Murcia from 1925-1929, at Oxford University from 1929-1931, and at the University of Seville from 1932-1938, when he left Spain for the United States to escape the Spanish Civil War. He joined the faculty at Wellesley College in 1941 and remained until his retirement in 1957. After his wife Germaine Cahen's death in 1947, Guillén married Irene Mochi-Sismondi in 1961. He retired to Italy and later to Spain. He died in Málaga, Spain in 1984.

Arrangement

The collection was donated in stages by Jorge Guillén, his daughther Teresa (Guillén) Gilman, and his second wife Irene, and is arranged according to how it was received. Part I, the first set of materials donated by Jorge Guillén in 1976, was the first to be processed. Parts II and III, and the additional series, were added later. When all of the materials were compiled into one finding aid in 2024, they were arranged in the following order:

I. Part I

II. Part II

III. Part III

IV. Correspondence with Teresa (Guillén) Gilman

V. Letters to Irene Guillén

VI. Correspondence with family and friends

VII. Irene Guillén diaries and appointment books

Processing Information

Jorge Guillén donated the manuscripts of Y Otros Poemas to Wellesley College in 1976. A guide to the papers was created by a Continuing Education student volunteer at that time. The materials were described at the item level according to specifications requested by Guillén himself, and the folders were numbered 1-33. As later donations were received, the original gift was designated Part I. The original guide to Part I is available here: http://www.wellesley.edu/sites/default/files/assets/departments/libraryandtechnology/files/3p_guillen_i.pdf

In June and November, 1985, Jorge Guillén's children donated a larger set of his papers. A detailed guide to these materials, designated as Part II, was created by Dr. Ruth Whittredge, former Assistant Professor of Spanish at Wellesley College. The folder numbering was continued from Part I. Part II comprises folders 34-206, and is available here: http://www.wellesley.edu/sites/default/files/assets/departments/libraryandtechnology/files/3p_guillen_ii.pdf

Another donation of Guillén's papers was received from his children in June, 1997. A guide to that donation, designated Part III, was created by Archives student assistants. The folder numbering was again continued from Parts I and II. Part III comprises folders 207-256, and is available here: http://www.wellesley.edu/sites/default/files/assets/departments/libraryandtechnology/files/3p_guillen_iii.pdf

In early 2024, the three original guides were edited slightly and imported into ArchivesSpace. Some folder titles were modified for clarity. Item-level information was not included in the ArchivesSpace finding aid, however the original folder number was included in a note with each file, to serve as a crosswalk between the ArchivesSpace finding aid and the three original guides. Users are encouraged to consult the original guides for detailed content information for Parts I-III.
