Biographical / Historical

The earliest college song book, Songs of Wellesley, A Collection of Songs for the Use of the Glee Club and Students of Wellesley College, was published in 1897, and was compiled and edited by two students, Cordelia C. Nevers, '96, and Roberta H. Montgomery '97. The editor's preface to the first editions describes the book: "...It has been the aim of the editors to include all the Wellesley songs, written from time to time, which are worthy of preservation. In addition to the older and better known songs, the collection includes many of the later and less familiar ones, as well as some that have not appeared before; also a few general favorites, not of Wellesley origin, without which no college song book seems complete." As of 1906, the next edition of the song book was published by the managers of the Student Aid Society. Mary Caswell, who was the Secretary to the President, was the editor of the 1906, 1910, and 1912 editions. The following editions were edited by Professor of Music, Hamilton MacDougal. As of 1937 the book was being produced by the Christian Association, and in 2003 by the Alumnae Association. The regular publication of new editions was meant to keep up to date by adding recent classes' songs.
