Scope and Contents
Collection consists of the records of the Sigma Xi Society, or The Scientific Research Honor Society, and specifically the Wellesley Chapter established in 1938, dating from 1937-1977. Consists of three series: Series. I Society administration and activities (1937 January-1977) includes records of the chartering and installation of the Wellesley Chapter, the Chapter’s Constitution, requirements for elections, and membership structure, and meeting materials, records of events, Manual of Procedure, publications, committee records, and records of members accomplishments. Series II. Membership, nominations and elections (1938-1977) includes records of nominees and their credentials, membership lists and records of pledges and initiations, and election records. Series III. Secretary’s records and meeting minutes (1938-1976) includes minutes taken at Chapter meetings and Executive Committee meetings and other records of the Chapter Secretary.

Biographical / Historical
Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society is an international society focused on science and engineering. The Society was founded at Cornell University in 1886, and the first five women were elected to the Society the next year, in 1887. The Wellesley College Chapter of Sigma Xi was established in May, 1938. The election of full and associate members to Sigma Xi took place during Honors Convocation (also referred to as Honors Chapel). Full membership was granted to faculty members to recognize exemplary research work in any of the sciences. Associate membership was granted to Graduate Assistants and students who conducted independent work in more than one science.
